Why economics is cool!
Economics is the science of understanding how our society works
What do you think when you hear the word “economics”? Do you think of Wall Street and banks and business? Many people think so, but economics go much deeper.
“Economics is the science of understanding how our society works, how we create fairness, how to structure our society and economy to make sure everyone has the best possible life,” says Andrew Charlton, Director at AlphaBeta in Sydney in a new video by The Women in Economics Network (WEN), an Australian group of professionals dedicated to inspire more women to choose a career in the field.
WEN sat down with some of the brightest in business – property markets analysts, consultants, university professors – to talk about what personally excites them about economics. The most common response: economics can give you the skills and knowledge to make the world a better place.
“Economics is a way to understand what’s going on behind the headlines,” says Dr Charlton. Or as Michelle Meyer, Head of U.S. Economics at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, puts it: “Economics is cool!”
